About Xolotuvani

An independent guide to crafts, hobbies, and DIY culture in the Czech Republic.

What We Do

Xolotuvani is an independent editorial project dedicated to Czech crafts, creative hobbies, and DIY culture. We write practical guides, in-depth explorations of traditional techniques, and honest reviews of workshops and resources — all focused on the Czech Republic and its rich handmade heritage.

Our content covers a wide range of crafts: woodcarving, bobbin lace, pottery, macrame, textile arts, paper crafts, and more. We pay particular attention to the intersection of traditional Czech folk techniques and contemporary making culture, which we find genuinely exciting and often underreported.

Our Approach

We believe that good craft writing should be useful first. Every article we publish aims to give readers something they can actually do with the information — whether that is finding a workshop, choosing the right tools, or understanding the history of a technique well enough to appreciate it more deeply.

We do not accept payment for editorial coverage. Our recommendations are based on genuine research and, where possible, direct experience. When we have not personally visited a workshop or used a product, we say so clearly.

All our content is written in English to serve both Czech residents and the many international visitors and expats who share an interest in Czech craft culture.

Czech Craft Culture

The Czech Republic has an exceptionally rich tradition of folk crafts. Bobbin lace-making in Vamberk and Sedlice, woodcarving in the Bohemian Forest, pottery in Beroun and Moravia, glass-blowing in northern Bohemia — these are not museum pieces but living traditions, practised today by thousands of people across the country.

At the same time, a new generation of makers is bringing fresh perspectives to these traditions, combining historical techniques with contemporary design sensibilities and sharing their work through social media and craft markets. Xolotuvani aims to document and celebrate both the traditional and the contemporary.
